Successful HIV/AIDS Global Initiatives: A Briefing for the Congressional Black Caucus

This event highlighted one of the few success stories in addressing the global tragedy of HIV/AIDS. Brazil has cut its AIDS mortality rate by 50%, AIDS morbidity rate by 70%, and opportunistic TB cases by up to 80% in the late 1990s. Employing a strategy based on health promotion (enhanced diagnosis of HIV and STDs; programs targeting vulnerable groups with condoms, disposable needles, etc) and a policy of universal and free access to antiretroviral therapy, Brazil’s success model holds promise that a global AIDS solution is possible.  Click below to read more.
