PRC launches “Making the 2010 Census Count” initiative.
May. 13, 2008The 2010 Census will be the basis for reapportionment of seats in the House of Representatives among the states; for redistricting Congressional House seats within the states; and for redistricting state legislatures as well as county and municipal elected officials. A full and accurate decennial census is also critical to ensuring that state and local programs and organizations receive the funding they are entitled to. The 2010 Census will determine the allocation of more than $300 billion in federal funds, and states, too, will use the decennial data to determine the allocation of funding to local governments and programs. The Census is particularly critical to meeting the needs of underserved communities.
With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PRC is launching a new initiative aimed at improving the accuracy of the 2010 Census and reducing the undercount in historically “hard-to-count” communities. PRC will work with regional associations of foundations to educate local foundations and organizations about what they can do in their communities to improve the accuracy of the 2010 Census.
